Glenn Pendlay:

Lots of confusion about heel height... most of it caused by people using different methods to measure.

First of all, I am going to use a 44EU rogue and Do-win shoe to measure (size 11 American), this will vary slightly, in other words the height will be slightly less if you are ordering a size 6, and slightly more if you are ordering a size 14.

The total height from the floor to the top of the heal is 1 1/4 inches. This is measured at the point where the heel of the foot actually sits, not the back of the sole which actually extends beyond the upper. Because of the upward slope, the measurement will be slightly higher if you measure there, but the relevant measure is the heel at the point the heel of the foot actually rests.

Now, the thickness of the sole of the shoe under the ball of the foot is 7/16 of an inch. The relevant height of the heel is not the total height, it is the difference in height between the sole at the heel and the sole at the ball of the foot. This means the the real "heel height" is actually 13/16 of an inch.

This measurement is almost identical on the major brands of weightlifting shoes. As I sit here, I am measuring a pair of Werksan shoes, total heel is 1 3/16, and the sole at the ball of the foot is 6/16... for a difference of exacty 13/16. I also have a pair of Adidas "Equipment" shoes, not the most current style but should be representative, and the heel is 1 1/2 inches, and the sole at the ball of the foot is 9/16, which gives a slightly higher heel of 15/16, but they are size 14 and I would expect a size 11 to conform more to the other two pairs. I simply dont have a pair of size 11 adidas handy to measure. So, the VS, Do-win, Rogue, Adidas, Nike, Werksan, are all within about 1/16 of an inches of having the same measurement. It is also the same measurment, or very, very nearly the same, as sample shoes I have from several other Chinese manufacturers, Indian manufacturers, several examples of shoes made in the Czech Republic, and even the exact same as a pair of old Russian shoes that I got in Moscow which were made sometime in the 1980's. It is also very similar to the heel height of a pair of "makeshift" dress shoes that Tommy Kono wore in the 1952 Olympics, which I had for a while and I believe are now in the possession of Don Weideman. I also have 2 pairs of leather hi-top shoes that are the type worn by many US lifters in the 1960's, and were manufactured in the 1960's. I dont know who wore them or their exact history, but I can tell from pictures that they are representative of shoes worn at that time. The heel height on those is about 14/16, only a 1/16 of an inch difference from the modern shoes.

I guess what this tells me is that the heel height on weightlifting shoes is pretty standard. Yes, there are some older Do-win and VS shoes floating around with higher heels, these would be styles from several years ago. If you want higher heels, and some do, you can look for these, many sizes are still available, or you can have a cobbler add to your existing heel, lifters all the way from Bednarski to Chaplin have had this done. I saw some fairly cheaply made shoes that Kyle Pierce brought back from somewhere in Europe a few years ago that looked like they had an abnormally low heel, but I havnt seen these shoes since. Ive not seen them worn at any competitions, at least not that I remember. But 99% of lifters are going to be fine with the standard heel height, it works for the vast majority, thats why most everyone makes shoes with this height.
