Skipping meals and alcohol consumption The regulation of energy intake and expenditure among weight loss participants.

Department of Psychology, Bowling Green State University, Bowling Green, OH 43403, USA.
Research suggests that specific eating patterns (e.g., eating breakfast) may be related to favorable weight status. This investigation examined the relationship between eating patterns (i.e., skipping meals; consuming alcohol) and weight loss treatment outcomes (weight loss, energy intake, energy expenditure, and duration of exercise). Fifty-four overweight or obese adults (BMI>/=27kg/m(2)) participated in a self-help or therapist-assisted weight loss program. Daily energy intake from breakfast, lunch, dinner, and alcoholic beverages, total daily energy intake, total daily energy expenditure, physical activity, and weekly weight loss were assessed. On days that breakfast or dinner was skipped, or alcoholic beverages were not consumed, less total daily energy was consumed compared to days that breakfast, dinner, or alcoholic beverages were consumed. On days that breakfast or alcohol was consumed, daily energy expenditure (breakfast only) and duration of exercise were higher compared to days that breakfast or alcohol was not consumed. Individuals who skipped dinner or lunch more often had lower energy expenditure and exercise duration than individuals who skipped dinner or lunch less often. Individuals who consumed alcohol more often had high daily energy expenditure than individuals who consumed alcohol less often. Skipping meals or consuming alcoholic beverages was not associated with weekly weight loss. In this investigation, weight loss program participants may have compensated for excess energy intake from alcoholic beverages and meals with greater daily energy expenditure and longer exercise duration.

Objective:Moderate alcohol consumption is associated with a decreased risk of type II diabetes. This study investigates the effect of moderate alcohol consumption on adipokines and insulin sensitivity.Subjects:Twenty healthy, lean (body mass index (BMI) 18.5-25 kg/m(2); n=11) or overweight (BMI>27 kg/m(2); n=9) men (18-25 years). Methods:Three cans of beer (40 g alcohol) or alcohol-free beer daily during 3 weeks. Results:Adiponectin and ghrelin concentrations increased (P<0.01) by 11 and 8%, while acylation-stimulating protein (ASP) concentrations decreased by 12% (P=0.04) after moderate alcohol consumption. Concentrations of leptin and resistin remained unchanged. Insulin sensitivity by an oral glucose tolerance test (OGTT) was not affected by moderate alcohol consumption, but 2 h glucose concentrations were lower (P=0.01) after beer (4.5+/-0.1 mmol/l) than alcohol-free beer (4.9+/-0.1 mmol/l). Both free fatty acids and glucagon concentrations showed a stronger increase (P<0.01) after 90 min during OGTT after beer than alcohol-free beer. Changes of adiponectin were positively correlated (r=0.69, P<0.001), and changes of leptin (r=-0.53, P=0.016) and ASP (r=-0.43, P=0.067) were negatively correlated with changes of insulin sensitivity index. All these results did not differ between lean and overweight men. Conclusions:Moderate alcohol consumption increased adiponectin and ghrelin, while it decreased ASP concentrations both in lean and overweight men. These changes are in line with the hypothesized improvement of insulin sensitivity, but did not affect insulin sensitivity within 3 weeks of moderate alcohol consumption.European Journal of Clinical Nutrition advance online publication, 6 June 2007; doi:10.1038/sj.ejcn.1602821.

Ethanol Produces Muscle Damage in Human Volunteers
Sun K. Song and Emanuel Rubin
Repeated administration of ethanol (42 percent of total calories) for 28 days increased serum creatine phosphokinase activity and produced ultrastructural changes in skeletal muscle of human volunteers. The data suggest that alcoholic myopathy results from ethanol toxicity, rather than from nutritional or other factors.
א. מה זה large? (זה יכול להיות גם 5 ליטר בירה)Our studies showed evidence of alterations in CHO and lipid metabolism in response to the intake of large amounts of alcohol, particularly in the 24-h study. Plasma glucose concentrations and the overall glycemic response to CHO-rich meals over 24 h were reduced when large amounts of alcohol were consumed
