Q : What's your opinion on resistance bands? (e.g., as a substitute while traveling, or other uses...)
A : Resistance bands don't work in this program, because of #1. They cannot be finely calibrated for an incremental increase, which is the guts of the method.
Q : How would you recommend incorporating posture-corrective exercises into SS in order to make up for 40+ hours of sitting every week?
A : The squat and deadlift perform this function quite nicely. Standing up straight at the end of a heavy rep is wonderful postural exercise.
Q : Why are there no rotational accessory exercises in SS? Everything occurs in the sagittal plane.
A : Because if everything gets strong, the components that cause rotation are strong too. The biggest mistake in S&C is the assumption that strength training must look like sports practice.
Q : What are your thoughts on incorporating strongman elements into intermediate programming (e.g., Cube for Strongman)
A : I don't think it's necessary, since strongman accessory work is not as incrementally increasable as barbell training. If a guy is going to a strongmen contest, it's obviously necessary.
Q : Whats the single biggest mistake you see beginners make?
A : Not increasing weight every workout. Strength accumulates if you drive the adaptation with increasing stress.
Q : How do we know if adding a certain ancillary exercise will affect our progression negatively? Aren't they supposed to help the progression on the main lifts? (i.e. LTE helping the bench and the OHP)
A : Assistance exercises are not necessary until work volume becomes a manipulable training variable, later in the intermediate phase. Squats, presses, deadlifts, bench presses, cleans, and chins cover all the muscle groups, so assistance exercises plug no holes. They are for adding work volume, later.
Q : will stuff like wrist rollers, calf raises, cable crunches and lat pulldowns really interfere with the main lifts?
A : Recovery ability is finite. Use it wisely.
Q : What is a common mistake you see people make even after years of training?
A : Letting good technique deteriorate in favor of heavier weights. This is necessary for a competitor, not for you. But you may eventually discover that competition is the best way to maintain interest in your training, and if you do, the injury potential will become part of the risk you assume.
Q : I've been doing SS for sixteen months and I still don't have a girlfriend. Care to explain?
A : Maybe you're very ugly.
Q : Any tips for a 16 year old a few months into SS?
A : Be patient and do the program. You're not in a position to invent your own ways to train. Yet.
Q : Do you have any tips on how to strengthen my grip during the deadlift? What weight do you find acceptable to start using a mixed grip (overhand/underhand).
A : Deadlifts are the best grip exercise for grip strength. Do all the warmups with a double-overhand grip and your grip with strengthen as your warmup weights follow your work sets upward.
